The New York Giants Release Daniel Jones After QB Requests Exit Following Demotion

The New York Giants have released quarterback Daniel Jones after he requested to be let go following a demotion on the team's depth chart.

Reports surfaced Thursday revealing that during the open portion of practice, Jones donned a red scout team jersey and even lined up at safety during offensive drills. Preparing for Sunday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Giants had Jones on the scout team defense alongside practice squad offensive linemen, tight end coach Tim Kelly, assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones, and offensive assistant Christian Daboll.

Less than 24 hours later, the Giants decided to part ways with their former franchise quarterback. Team President John Mara announced the move in a statement, confirming that Jones approached the organization to discuss his release.

"Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that it would be best for him and for the team," Mara stated. "Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out.

"We hold Daniel in high regard and greatly appreciate him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Jones will now go through waivers, but due to the size of his contract, he is expected to clear and become a free agent. The move will leave the Giants with over $20 million in dead money on their books for the 27-year-old quarterback.

Struggles Led to Demotion and Departure

Jones, selected sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, signed a massive four-year, $160 million contract extension just two years ago. However, since inking the deal, he has struggled, leading the Giants to a 3-13 record during that span. His performance this season ultimately led to his benching and eventual release.

Over his five and a half seasons with the Giants, Jones completed 64.1% of his passes for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. He also tallied 2,179 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, finishing with an 84.3 career passer rating.

Now a free agent, Jones faces an uncertain future in the NFL as the Giants move forward without the quarterback they once hoped would lead their franchise.
